Inside of the root of each tooth is a nerve tissue called the pulp. When this pulp experiences
inflammation, infection, exposure by a deep cavity, or dies as a result of trauma or a deep
cavity, it will require root canal therapy. If left untreated, a dead or infected pulp can cause
pain and further infect nearby bone and gum tissue.
In order to preserve the tooth and prevent the spread of infection, the nerve within the pulp
must be removed. After the nerve is removed, the vacant space inside the tooth is filled.
Finally, the treated tooth won’t be as strong as used to be, so it will need to be prepared for a
crown.
